Without maintaining and strengthening your circulatory system, nurturing vitality will be difficult, if not impossible. Today, we’ll examine a healthy circulatory system and how to nurture vitality within it. With a bit of knowledge and lifestyle suggestions, you can see significant results in your circulatory health.

Circulatory System Function: Your Questions Answered

How does the circulatory system function normally? And how does circulatory system functionality contribute to strengthening and nurturing your vitality?

What is the Circulatory System?

The circulatory system is made up of your heart and blood vessels. It can also be called the cardiovascular system. Its primary function is to provide oxygen and nutrients to the body’s many different muscles, tissues, and organs. It also removes any waste from those parts of the body, which is then filtered out and disposed of.

The heart pumps blood through a network of arteries and veins. Without this regular circulation of blood to the body’s tissues, they wouldn’t be able to function. Ultimately, your body has more than 60,000 miles of vessels, circulating the equivalent of 1.5 gallons of blood daily.

How Does a Healthy Circulatory System Work?

The circulatory system moves blood throughout the entire body. As such, it affects the healthy function of the whole body. This process happens multiple times a minute without your awareness and is invaluable to your ongoing health.

It all starts in the heart’s right ventricle, which pumps low-oxygenated blood into the lungs. It then travels into the lungs through the main pulmonary artery, returning to the heart’s upper left atrium. The left atrium sends the oxygenated blood to the left ventricle, which pumps the blood into the arteries.

Oxygenated blood moves away from the heart through the arteries, which then move through the body and organs. It then provides oxygen while taking away carbon dioxide and waste products. The blood then returns to the heart through the circulatory system’s veins. Any waste products they pick up are filtered through the kidneys or exhaled as carbon dioxide.

The Circulatory System and a Healthy Lifestyle

Since a healthy circulatory system is necessary for your vitality, how can you nurture it? There are several ways to protect your circulatory system’s health, including the following.

  • Try having at least 150 minutes (2 and a half hours total) of physical activity weekly.
  • Eat a heart-healthy diet rich in vegetables and fiber and low in saturated fats and processed foods. Some heart-healthy options would be Mediterranean-style or plant-based diets.
  • Reduce your daily stress if at all possible.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Manage conditions that can negatively impact the circulatory system, like diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
  • Quit smoking. In addition to improving your lungs, skin, and teeth, quitting smoking will help protect your circulatory system.
